Time has done it again. We mark the close of one year to welcome a new.

When considering the message we want to convey moving forward, take a moment to reflect on your word use. Without delving into the impact of words in social media, in any organization, words are the main tool used to articulate the vision, mission, differentiation, goals of the company. They are representative of our intended actions.

For instance, with the pandemic firmly established as part of our personal and working lives, it is still “unprecedented”? Are we still waiting to “return to normal” or “go back”? Even if you could, would you? And, do these declarations actually undermine our leadership abilities?

Being strategic leaders means trailblazing a new path with the capacity to anticipate, articulate, engage, challenge, and motivate our people to action our plans. Through precise word choice, we clarify our intentions to those who need to understand the path forward in order to follow.

Poor choices in terms of expression will, by the opposite side of the coin, impact people’s attitudes. Phrases that include “waiting” or “back” can have a significant impact on morale and productivity.

Impactful managers will think about how to energize their teams. They will plan to connect. It is not “now more than ever”.

The time to engage is always.

There is no magic turn of phrase. The language needs to be owned. It needs to be authentic and focused on the recipient. If you don’t know who the audience is or how to connect with them—find out. Listen first.

W—A—I—T = Why Am I Talking?

Whatever the business, regardless of industry, have a conversation. Ensure understanding. Seek to communicate. Telling someone they have 80% coverage for their benefits is actually the same as saying employees have to pay 20% out of pocket, yet it is interpreted the same? Framing and contextualizing matters and is depend upon the audience.

This doesn’t mean creating a vocabulary no one will understand or be able to relate to. Your linguistic choice helps build your community by shaping the understanding between those who work together—regardless of remoteness or in-person.

Words shape thoughts. Thoughts lead to actions. Actions create change.

We want to be part of that positive change.
